PRESENTATION

Rennes School of Business place special emphasis on relevant research to actual business and management problems. Our Global DBA programme is aimed at experienced managers who wish to pursue doctorate studies on a part-time basis.

The DBA is offered in collaboration with Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications (BUPT) in China, as well as with Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the case of FGV, the programme is offered as a pre-DBA in Brazil, with subsequent DBA modules in France.

Rennes School of Business is the degree awarding institution.

Mission

The mission of the DBA programme is to prepare higher-level managers with significant business experience to become engaged scholars, reflective practitioners or faculty members. This is done by offering a structured doctorate degree programme that is both rigorous and relevant, using a combination of course work and a high quality original research thesis.

puce Learning Goals

At the completion of the DBA programme, DBA graduates will:

  • master a thorough knowledge of research epistemology, methodology and research skills;
  • demonstrate breadth of know-ledge in management and the capacity to analyse issues and situations in business with a specifically global dimension;
  • master advanced knowledge of their chosen area(s) of specialization;
  • demonstrate capacity to produce research that constitutes a practically highly relevant and academically original contribution in their major field of study and that are publishable in major international conferences and journals;
  • demonstrate added value to the academic and business community as thought leaders, engaged scholars, reflective practitioners or in-residence faculty members;
  • demonstrate the capacity to transfer knowledge and foster knowledge creation.

Application and Admission

APPLICATION AND ADMISSION

The (pre-)DBA program is aimed at post-experience students with a recognized Master’s degree in Management and guides students towards executing and reporting their own original research project. Applications are submitted to and pre-selected by the local DBA Director in Brazil or China, and should include:

  • The completed application form;
  • A document, stating the general nature of the proposed field of study and a preliminary research topic as well as the motivation for pursuing the pre-DBA degree.
  • Official transcripts of academic courses previously undertaken;
  • Certified copies of degrees or diplomas previously obtained.

Previous academic history, letters of recommendation, motivation and aptitude to do postgraduate level work, and professional experience are all taken into consideration. An interview by the local (pre-)DBA Director and possibly an additional interview by the DBA Director is part of the selection process. The final admission decision is made by the Rennes School of Business DBA Programme Committee.

Curriculum

The Global DBA programme consists of course work and supervised research resulting in a DBA thesis. The course work has a focus on research methods as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods for business students and emphasizes current issues in the main business disciplines as well as selected themes that fit both the student population preferences and the strengths of Rennes School of Business. The first courses are offered locally (in China or Brazil): subsequent modules are included as part of two ‘global residencies’ in France, China or Brazil.

The programme will typically take 48 months, with a possibility for fast students to complete the degree in 36 months. The programme is offered by Rennes School of Business, in close collaboration with BUPT and FGV, with courses taught predominantly by professors from Rennes School of Business but also from BUPT and FGV, occasionally through co-teaching, and individual thesis research supervision offered by a Rennes School of Business supervisor and a BUPT/FGV co-supervisor.

The curriculum is shown below (specific course titles may change depending on the partner and cohort):
